Southern Tasmanians are gearing up to “Paint the Town Red” by implementing exciting red lighting and features at their businesses and homes to celebrate the fourth Dark Mofo Festival.
Paint the Town Red is a fun and creative way for operators and residents to show their support for Dark Mofo and contribute to the atmosphere and buzz it creates.
“We had great participation last year, with some businesses putting in amazing efforts to make their venue stand out, including lights, clothing, theatrical shows and more to add to the vibrancy of Dark Mofo. And it will be even bigger this year” said Melinda Anderson, CEO of Destination Southern Tasmania.
This is the first year we have extended the program to residents. We are inviting them to help power the Paint the Town Red program using red bulbs, lanterns or decorations to colour their house, front fence, tree or maybe even the family pet.”
Participating businesses this year are really getting into the spirit of Dark Mofo, developing a range of creative activations including red lighting on a grand scale, special events and more, said Ms Anderson.
“Lenna of Hobart, Wrest Point and Hotel Grand Chancellor always create a stunning viewpoint for locals and visitors with their red lighting but participation is not limited to Hobart with the New Norfolk township, Pumphouse Point and even Tahune Airwalk all getting in on the act. Over fifty businesses have registered with us as participating in some form, from simple lighting through to extravagant installations.
“There are even special river cruises on “red ships” which will enable Paint the Town Red and Dark Mofo to be seen in a whole other light. “
Ms Anderson is encouraging businesses large and small to participate as well as local residents.
“Dark Mofo plays a significant role in bringing visitors to the state in a traditionally quiet period and it provides a wonderful program to encourage Tasmanians to get out and about. We have designed Paint the Town Red with Dark Mofo and Tasmanian Hospitality Association to enhance the audience experience for Dark Mofo and at the same time show support for this amazing event that provides significant cultural and economic benefits for the state.”
Destination Southern Tasmania will also coordinate a public social media program to enable locals and visitors to also be part of Paint the Town Red through sharing pictures of participating businesses and homes, posting them publicly with the hashtags #paintthetownred and #darkmofo for the opportunity to win further prizes.
Paint the Town Red will be happening for the full Dark Mofo festival, from the 10 to 21 of June.
Registrations for businesses and residents who would like to participate in Paint the Town Red should contact Destination Southern Tasmania directly at www.southerntasmania.com.au.
