- 2026 Huon Art Awards Celebrate Tasmanian Creativity
From 7–22 March 2026, the historic Cygnet Town Hall will once again become a lively hub of creativity as the 2026 Huon Art Awards returns to the Huon Valley.
Presented by the Huon Art Exhibitions Group (HAEG), the exhibition brings together more than 280 artworks by local and Tasmanian artists, offering visitors a genuine connection to Southern Tasmania’s creative life.
A Community-Led Arts Institution
What began as a small collective of local artists has grown into one of Southern Tasmania’s most active regional arts organisations. HAEG now supports more than 120 members and operates two gallery spaces in Cygnet, including the Cygnet Gallery on Mary Street and the Lovett Gallery behind the Town Hall.
Run largely by volunteers, HAEG demonstrates the strength of community-led cultural organisations in regional Tasmania. These galleries do more than display art, they create meeting places, support creative careers, and contribute to the region’s sense of place, while also playing an important role in attracting visitors beyond Hobart.
The 2026 Exhibition
The exhibition opens on Friday 7 March at 6:30pm, with award announcements across a broad range of categories. The show then runs daily until 22 March, from 10am to 4pm, with free entry for all visitors.
Artists compete across painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics and mixed media, with awards recognising established artists, emerging practitioners and students. This inclusive structure supports artistic development at every stage, reinforcing the Huon Art Awards as both a celebration and a pathway for Tasmanian creatives.
Visitors can also purchase artworks directly, providing meaningful income for artists while supporting HAEG’s ongoing exhibitions and programs.
Cygnet and the Huon Valley Creative Scene
Cygnet has earned a reputation as one of Southern Tasmania’s most creative villages. Found along Mary Street are galleries, studios, cafés and craft spaces that reflect a community shaped by makers, musicians and artists.
This creative energy extends well beyond the exhibition. Annual events such as the Cygnet Folk Festival and the Handmade in Cygnet Studio Art Trail draw visitors throughout the year, while the surrounding Huon Valley landscape — rivers, orchards, forests and mountains — continues to inspire much of the work on display.

Cultural events like the Huon Art Awards play a growing role in regional tourism. They encourage longer stays, support local businesses and offer visitors authentic experiences grounded in community life.
