Bruny Island Science Fun Day 2025

The Friends of Bruny Island Quarantine Station (FOBIQS) will mark ten years of curiosity, creativity, and community connection with the Bruny Island Science Fun Day.

Sunday 5 October 2025

This milestone year brings a fresh twist to the much-loved event, pairing scientific discovery with artistic expression. Ten interactive activity stations will invite families and young people (aged 8–15) to get hands-on with experiences such as magnetic painting and building electronic greeting cards—blurring the lines between art and science in fun and surprising ways. Children under 8 are also welcome to join in with parental help and supervision.

Event coordinator Rob says the approach reflects the way science and creativity naturally work together. “This year’s program is about showing that experimentation and imagination go hand in hand—whether you’re building circuits or creating something beautiful, he said.

Alongside the activities, the day will feature guest speakers, random-draw prizes, and perhaps even a visit from much-loved local character Eric the Echidna.

The Quarantine Station, set within a state reserve since 2003, offers a unique backdrop for discovery—its history spanning Aboriginal use, scientific research, and plant quarantine operations. With free entry, on-site parking, toilet facilities, and plenty of space to enjoy a picnic, the site is an ideal place for families to spend a spring day on the island.

The event is proudly supported by Inspiring Australia, the national science engagement program fostering awareness and appreciation of science across Australian communities, alongside contributions from local businesses and volunteers.
