Dark Sky Exploration Evenings

Sitting high in Tasmania’s Central Highlands, the Great Lake Hotel is inviting guests to slow down, look up, and experience the night sky in a completely different way, with a series of Dark Sky Exploration evenings running across winter in 2026.

Hosted by Elizabeth and Stephen Harvey from the Astronomical Society of Tasmania, these guided evenings explore the wonders of the galaxy above Tasmania’s highlands, from the makeup of the night sky through to the stories and science behind the stars, planets and celestial bodies visible overhead.

Set against the vast open skies surrounding Great Lake Hotel, the experience combines learning, storytelling and observation in one of Tasmania’s most atmospheric landscapes.

Running on 23 May, 20 June, 18 July and 22 August 2026, each Dark Sky Exploration session begins at 7:00pm and includes a guided viewing experience, along with a complimentary Willie Smith’s Hot Spiced Cider and R&R Smith Apple Pie supper.

Guests attending the event will also receive 15% off accommodation at Miena Village, offering the chance to extend the experience and spend more time exploring the Central Highlands during winter.

The Dark Sky Exploration evenings are designed for anyone curious about the night sky, whether you already have an interest in astronomy or simply want to experience the stillness and beauty of Tasmania after dark.
