Tasmania’s only obstacle course mud run, The Rugged Race, returns on Saturday, 29 November 2025, bringing a day of high-energy fun and muddy challenges to Redbanks at Nugent, just 50 minutes from Hobart.
Now in its fifth year, the event is expected to attract more than 1,200 participants and spectators from across Tasmania and interstate. The 7-kilometre course features over 45 obstacles, from rope climbs and mud pits to water slides and balance beams. Runners can choose from competitive or social waves, with options to suit every fitness level — and a junior course open to children aged eight and up.
More than just a race, The Rugged Race is known for its spirited, community-driven atmosphere. Spectators enjoy free entry, with food trucks, a bar, live commentary, music, spot prizes, and best-dressed competitions keeping the energy high throughout the day.
“The energy on race day is unreal,” said event organiser Isobel Healey. “The dress-ups are always a highlight, along with the small hero moments — people challenging themselves, helping each other, and crossing the finish line covered in mud and grinning from ear to ear. It’s gritty, it’s muddy, and it’s a lot of fun.”
In an exciting development, 2025 marks the first year The Rugged Race will serve as an official qualifying event for the 2026 OCR Community World Championships. The recognition places Tasmania firmly on the map for the growing global sport of obstacle racing, which will feature in the Modern Pentathlon program at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
Proudly run by a small Tasmanian team, The Rugged Race continues to grow as one of the state’s most anticipated adventure events, combining fitness, fun, and camaraderie in Tasmania’s rugged outdoors.
