A new sanctuary of stillness has arrived in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley with the opening of Arden Bathhouse, a private forest retreat offering a restorative, self-guided bathing experience amid the Blue Gums.
Perched along a western-facing ridgeline with sweeping views of the valley, Arden Bathhouse is the latest creation from Alice and Tristan Burns — owners of Arden Retreat and the much-loved luxe cabin, The Croft. The Bathhouse extends their vision of immersive, nature-connected experiences, inviting guests to slow down and reconnect through simple rituals of fire, water, and quiet.
Designed for couples, friends, or small groups, this secluded bathhouse experience includes exclusive four-hour access for up to six guests. The space centres around a beautifully crafted cabin — complete with a living area, change room, and small amenities — linked by timber walkways to a wood-fired sauna, cold plunge, and outdoor hot tub under the trees.
“Arden Bathhouse is about creating space for stillness,” explains co-owner Alice Burns. “It’s not a rushed spa appointment — it’s time set aside to move slowly, to be present, and to enjoy the beauty around you.”
Guests are encouraged to make the experience their own: tending the wood-fired sauna, alternating between heat and cold at their own pace, and ending with a soak in the hot tub as the sun dips over the valley. With its thoughtful design and unhurried rhythm, the Bathhouse offers a rare opportunity to disconnect from the noise of everyday life and sink into the elemental calm of southern Tasmania’s landscape.
Just five minutes from Richmond and around 30 minutes from Hobart, Arden Bathhouse feels both secluded and accessible — ideal for a half-day retreat or as the perfect complement to a stay at The Croft.
Sessions are priced at $485 for up to six guests, with morning and afternoon sessions available by private booking.
