As the chill of winter deepens and Hobart begins to glow with the fiery spirit of Dark Mofo, one of Tasmania’s most iconic vessels is preparing to bring a unique and unforgettable experience to the River Derwent.
Redding the Sails
The Lady Nelson, a cherished tall ship operated by a dedicated volunteer crew, is once again presenting its much-loved Redding the Sails evening cruise – a vivid and immersive way to celebrate the darker months through light, music, and community connection.
Taking place on Friday 13 and Friday 20 June 2025, Redding the Sails is part of Tourism Tasmania’s OFF Season program and promises a two-hour harbour sailing event filled with warm hospitality and festival magic. Guests are invited to don their finest red attire and step aboard for a twilight voyage as the Lady Nelson transforms into a blazing beacon of crimson, gliding past Hobart’s luminous waterfront and the atmospheric glow of the Dark Mofo festivities.
A Tall Ship Celebration of Tasmanian Winter
Beyond the stunning visuals, Redding the Sails celebrates local talent and Tasmania’s maritime heritage. Each evening features live music performances by local artists—on 13 June, the LCM Jazz Band will deliver toe-tapping rhythms across blues, swing, and ragtime genres. On 20 June, Storm Bay, a spirited two-piece, will bring an energetic mix of Irish and nautical folk tunes.
Attendees are encouraged to engage with the crew, haul a line, steer the ship, or simply soak in the sights from deck while enjoying complimentary hearty soup and snacks. Passengers may also bring along their own food and beverages to enhance the experience.
There’s even a prize for the best-dressed guest in red, judged by the ship’s Master, Richard Catt.
An Invitation to Experience Something Truly Unique
“We love offering something a little different that brings people together during the winter season,” says Danni Vigers, Media and Marketing Coordinator for the Lady Nelson. “The atmosphere on board is incredible—warm, festive, and just a little bit magical. It’s a special way to connect with our maritime history while enjoying what makes Hobart so vibrant in winter.”
With limited spots available, early booking is essential. Tickets are $85 per person and include soup, snacks, and live entertainment. While the event is family-friendly, children’s tickets are not available for this particular sailing.
