Sisu Wines Opens Estate-Made Winery and Cellar Door

Sisu Wines has officially opened its architecturally designed cellar door and estate winery in Tasmania’s Coal River Valley, marking a significant milestone for the young vineyard and the region’s wine offering.

Founded in 2021 by Jake and Mary Sheedy, Sisu Wines is now one of the few Tasmanian wineries where every wine is grown, made and bottled entirely on a single-site estate. The opening completes a major investment in a 25-hectare vineyard, a gravity-fed winery and a thoughtfully designed cellar door at Campania, just under an hour from Hobart.

For founder and vigneron Jake Sheedy, the cellar door represents the final step in connecting visitors with the place behind the wines. “Opening the cellar door allows people to taste our wines exactly where they are grown and made,” he said. “It’s about letting the land speak through each glass and creating a genuine connection between people and place.”

The cellar door has been designed to sit comfortably within the Coal River landscape. Warm tones, local materials and considered craftsmanship shape an intimate tasting space, featuring Tasmanian blackwood furniture, local sandstone, spotted gum cladding and a central wood fireplace. Indoor and outdoor seating invites long, unhurried tastings, complemented by a small, seasonal food offering that highlights local producers.

Visitors can taste Sisu’s inaugural 2024 estate-grown releases, including Riesling, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, each already recognised by the Halliday Wine Companion. Panoramic valley views and close proximity to Hobart make the cellar door a welcome new stop for both locals and travellers exploring the Coal River region.

Sustainability underpins the project, with the vineyard certified by Sustainable and more than 1,300 native trees and shrubs planted in partnership with Landcare Tasmania as part of a long-term rewilding commitment.

The Sisu Wines cellar door opens seven days a week from 12 December, operating throughout summer from 10.30am to 4.30pm, with seasonal holiday closures.
