Southern Tasmania Shines at the 2025 Tasmanian Tourism Awards

Southern Tasmania’s tourism operators have again proven their excellence on the state’s biggest stage, taking home a remarkable share of honours at the 2025 Tasmanian Tourism Awards.

The annual awards, hosted by the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania, recognise the outstanding achievements of tourism operators and experiences across the state. This year’s results highlight the exceptional diversity, innovation and authenticity that define Southern Tasmania’s visitor economy — from heritage attractions and sustainable stays to cutting-edge new experiences.

Major Winners

The Port Arthur Historic Site was named Tasmania’s Major Tourist Attraction, reaffirming its place as one of the nation’s most significant heritage destinations. Meanwhile, sister site the Cascades Female Factory Historic Site took out Gold for Cultural Tourism, recognised for its powerful storytelling and interpretive experiences that continue to deepen understanding of Tasmania’s convict and First Nations histories.

Adventure met relaxation with Kuuma Nature Sauna, based at Margate Marina, winning Gold for Tourist Attractions and Bronze for Adventure Tourism. As Australia’s first sauna boat, Kuuma has captured attention for its innovative approach to wellbeing and nature-based tourism.

The region’s reputation for world-class events was also celebrated, with the Australian Wooden Boat Festival awarded Gold for Major Festivals & Events and the People’s Choice Award, while Tasmania’s Taste of Summer received Silver.

Excellence in Experience and Innovation

Pennicott Wilderness Journeys — a long-time leader in Tasmanian ecotourism — claimed Gold for Major Tour & Transport Operators, Gold for New Tourism Product with Cape Raoul Cruises, and Silver for Positive Impact Tourism.

In the Coal River Valley, Aquila Eco Retreat achieved dual Gold medals for Ecotourism and Unique Accommodation, setting a new benchmark for off-grid luxury and sustainable design. The valley also celebrated Killara Distillery, winner of Gold for Tourism Distilleries and Breweries, and Old Kempton Distillery, which earned Silver.

Hobart’s The Tasman, A Luxury Collection Hotel continued to elevate the state’s luxury accommodation offering, taking home Gold for 5 Star Luxury Accommodation.

The Gustav Weindorfer Award for Best New Tourism Business went to Evry Drive, a family-owned social enterprise offering electric vehicle hire powered by Tasmanian renewable energy.

Supporting visitors every step of the way, the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre received Silver for Visitor Information Services, recognising its vital role in connecting travellers with the best experiences across the region and beyond.

Celebrating Industry Leadership

The state’s highest individual honour, Tasmanian Tourism Champions, was awarded to Rodney Dunn and Séverine Demanet of The Agrarian Kitchen in New Norfolk — a proud moment for the Derwent Valley and a reflection of their enduring contribution to Tasmania’s culinary and agritourism landscape.

Rising talent was also recognised, with Sofia Tsamassiros of Eudaimonia Tasmanian Cycling Tours named the 2025 Tourism Minister’s Young Achiever. Her inclusive cycling programs and commitment to sustainable travel showcase the future of Tasmanian tourism.

Destination Southern Tasmania CEO Alex Heroys congratulated all award recipients, saying:
