Destination Southern Tasmania congratulates Tasmanian photographer Joy Kachina, who has been awarded Photographer of the Year in the 2025 Natural Landscape Photography Awards (NLPA), a globally recognised celebration of landscape photography.
Joy, who lives near the Central Plateau Conservation Area, is a passionate Tasmanian landscape photographer whose work captures the raw beauty and authenticity of Tasmania’s wilderness. Her winning folio featured images predominantly from Mount Field National Park and the Central Highlands, with a single image taken on the Tarkine Coast.
“All my images in the folio were taken in Mt Field National Park and the Central Highlands bar one on the Tarkine Coast,” Joy explained.
The competition, which received more than 11,000 entries from 1,134 photographers across 64 countries, is internationally recognised for celebrating natural and realistic photography. Unlike many contests, the NLPA prohibits excessive digital manipulation and artificial intelligence, ensuring the winning images reflect genuine experiences in the natural world.
For Joy, the honour is both humbling and affirming:
“I was simply hoping to be included in the NLPA photobook, so this is such a wonderful surprise! Being awarded Photographer of the Year is such an honour, and I’m deeply touched by it. The awards celebrate the true wonder of nature, which is at the heart of my photography.”
Joy’s recognition highlights Tasmania’s reputation as a global destination for nature-based photography.
From the ancient forests and waterfalls of Mount Field to the windswept beauty of the Central Highlands, Joy’s images showcase the rich diversity of Southern Tasmania’s landscapes, reminding us of the extraordinary natural environment right on our doorstep.
Destination Southern Tasmania warmly congratulates Joy on this incredible achievement and looks forward to continuing to share her vision of the region’s unique and wild beauty with the world.
