Southern Tasmania’s Tolpuddle Vineyard has again proven its global credentials, with its 2023 Chardonnay named Champion White Wine at the 2025 International Wine Challenge in London.
This is the second time Tolpuddle has claimed the title, reinforcing the Coal River Valley’s reputation as one of the world’s most exceptional cool-climate wine regions.
The Richmond-based vineyard triumphed over thousands of entries worldwide, with judges awarding 98 points and praising the Chardonnay as “captivating” and “complex”. Earlier this year, the same wine also collected the International Chardonnay Trophy, Best Australian White, and Best Tasmanian Chardonnay, while the 2023 Pinot Noir secured the Australian Pinot Noir Trophy.
Chief winemaker Adam Wadewitz said the honour reflects the dedication of the Tolpuddle team and the extraordinary vineyard site: “The IWC is one of the most respected competitions in the world, so this recognition is really meaningful.”
Founded in 1988 and now owned by Martin Shaw and Michael Hill Smith MW, Tolpuddle has built its reputation on the unique terroir of the Coal River Valley, where the cool, dry climate produces elegant Chardonnay and Pinot Noir of international acclaim.
The win further highlights Southern Tasmania’s strength as a wine tourism destination. Just 20 minutes from Hobart, Richmond offers visitors a blend of heritage and world-class cellar doors, with local producers such as Pooley Wines and Frogmore Creek adding to the region’s appeal. With limited releases of Tolpuddle’s Chardonnay and Pinot Noir priced at $105, wine enthusiasts are offered both exclusivity and quality.
