The Theatre Royal is thrilled to launch its 2024 season, jam-packed with a diverse range of experiences exploring all corners of creative expression.
Over the next year, the theatre is collaborating with outstanding performance artists, producers and festivals to present a unique range of intriguing and entertaining events for Tasmanian audiences.
The season kicks off with a colossal creative takeover by Mona Foma featuring the world premiere of Justin Sholder’s ANITO and the wild and brilliant dancework Wayfinder by Dancenorth. Following the festival, cult cabaret company Briefs Factory International set the night on a riotous and very cheeky spin cycle in Dirty Laundry.
The diverse performance program showcases incredible performances from Sydney Theatre Company, Archipelago Productions, Tasdance and Terrapin, to name just a few.
As a major theatrical event for the State, the Theatre Royal will present a new Australian production of the world’s longest running play – Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap, directed by Robyn Nevin.
For music lovers, Opera Australia returns with the classic bohemian love story La Bohème. Meanwhile a new series of local and national music collaborations, The Hedberg Sounds, showcases the beautiful Ian Potter Recital Hall and highlights an expansion of the Theatre’s partnership with the University of Tasmania.
The theatre’s commitment to children and families continues in 2024 with our Staycation school holiday program offering a mix of performances and participatory workshops that will engage and inspire kids.
In all, the Theatre Royal will present 21 productions of music, theatre, circus and dance in 2024 from Australia and overseas, including eight Tasmanian collaborations.
Simon Wellington, Chief Executive said the 2024 season provides a myriad of experiences, enabling audiences to choose from the best of what’s on offer locally and nationally.
“In 2024 we have a brilliant range of uplifting and engaging productions that will satisfy all appetites for risk or tradition. There are big, masterful classics, sitting alongside the quirky, kooky and kinky. It’s going to be a wild ride and we’re going to have a lot of fun.”
